Chartered 1960

The THS honors the principles and philosophy of Titus Holliday Harris, MD., the first chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and was formed as a tribute to Dr. Harris to memorialize his dedication to patient care, teaching of medical students and residents, and psychiatric research.  

 

The Society has met annually since its inception in 1960 throughout Texas.  CME's are offered at each meeting and is an opportunity to grow partnerships, renew friendships, and build long-standing relationships throughout the psychiatric community.

The Society membership numbers over 150 and comprises alumni from the University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences faculty and residency programs and psychiatry graduates.

Titus Holiday Harris, M.D. 1892 - 1969

His Accomplishments

Titus Harris accomplished many opportunities in his life. He established one of the earliest residency training programs for
      psychiatry in the Southwest. He
​ became certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in 1934​. He established a monthly scientific journal and became a Diseases of the Nervous System editor for 27 years.​ He co-authored many papers in professional journals​ and served as an associate editor of the American Journal of Psychiatry.​ He was a member of thirty professional societies and received numerous awards including the Hogg Foundation Award in recognition of his work in mental health studies.

 

He was the President of the Southern Psychiatric Association, Central Neuropsychiatric Association, Texas Neuropsychiatric Association, Texas Society for Mental Hygiene​ and Vice President of the American Psychiatric Association.

 

​After his passing, former students established the Titus Harris Society in 1960​ and now a honorary Doctor of Science degree from Southwestern University continues his legacy.
